Used to be charges varied on the value of stolen goods.They still do. But they also depend on the circumstances. If I smuggle a candy bar out of a store it's going to be a misdemeanor. But if I hold a knife to the clerk's throat and say give me a candy bar or I'll kill you, it's going to be a felony. And it seems that many states have decided in their wisdom that if I try to sneak a candy bar out of the store but shove the clerk to get past him I've graduated into a felony as well. |
