It has nothing to do with Israel. Christmas in most cultures wasn't a huge holiday either until american retailers made it big in the early 1900s. In fact in Europe....Christmas was a strictly religious holiday even into the 5os and 60s in Holland etc. They did gifts on st Nicholas day December 5.
