In an ideal world, the genocide of the Aboriginal Americans would never have happened, but it did and we can't take it back.The problem is that the existence of the legal entity of the United States is contingent on that genocide, so claiming its presence is legitimate and its laws must be obeyed necessarily endorses that genocide. If I kill you and take your house, then that was wrong and I can't take it back, but I shouldn't be allowed to keep your house and it would be ridiculous of me to claim that while stealing your house certainly was wrong, my claim to it is nonetheless legitimate and my right to kick other people out of it is absolute. If they had been expelled and were seeking the right to return to North America I would be in favor of granting such right within limits. That would be more like if I kicked you out of your house and, when you asked to return, I offered you the right to move back in with me subject to certain restrictions. Neither argument changes the fundamental point— Chris claimed that the original American society didn't "count" and the current American society does. |
