Yes, 9 women died from complications from legal abortions in 2009. There were 1.16 million legal abortions that year. That is a death rate of 1 in 128,889.Source: http://www.abort73.com/abortion_facts/us_abortion_statistics/ There don't seem to be good stats for deaths from tooth extraction per se. But it appears the rate of death for patients sedated for dentistry each year is 1 in 350,000. Assuming some of these cases did not involve extractions, then the rate for extractions is lower. So, less than for abortion, but not by an order of magnitude. However, the death rate for anesthesia during hospital operating room stays generally is 1 in 100,000. This is worse than the rate for abortions. Source: http://dentistry.about.com/od/dentalprocedures/a/teendies.htm From this I conclude that the risk of death from legal abortion does not justify the draconian regulations being imposed by supposed anti-regulatory Republicans on the abortion clinics. |
