Well, the Irish didn't start out Catholic after all. That happened en masse after Henry II (with the help of Irishman Dermot MacMurrough) got permission from the Pope to convert the rest of the Druidic pagans. Then there was the time when the Church of England was the official church of the entire British Isles. |
