The other thing that I think is likely is that people become more liberal over time, but not the same people. This causes people whose political views are otherwise unchanged to appear more conservative.Exactly. One may think that on social issues, I've become more conservative. In fact, I've actually become more liberal. It's the fact that the generation after me is even more liberal on certain issues than I am that makes me appear to have become more conservative when I haven't. For example, I've always been liberal on gay rights even in the 80's. However since I was slow on embracing gay marriage, it made me appear that I'd become more conservative over time, when in fact I was already supporting civil unions. The concept of same-sex civil unions would have been something that my otherwise pro-gay rights self would have hysterically laughed at in the 80's. I was also more of an economic libertarian as a youth (as were most young Gen Xers). Then I grew up. |
