You can't say he was "proven right" without dealing with the man and the way he did things. He was a second-string politician who found himself with a lot of power, which he abused and kept abusing until someone had the guts to stand in his way.The left of the time shot themselves in the foot and inadvertently helped build his power by never standing up to him. There were plenty of people who thought Stalin was a hero (which he was in some ways) without ever dealing with the fact that we was a monster to rival Hitler in most ways. People in Hollywood didn't have the guts to stand up and say "yes, I believe in socialism, but it's my right as an American, and here's why I believe the way I do." Instead they dealt with McCarthy by acting "unjustly wounded" and they weaseled, weaseled, weaseled. But McCarthy was the King Weasel and it took more than the Hollywood Weasels to bring him down. But none of this made McCarthy right. |
