Christian belief holds that Jesus is alive in all of us but is especially alive among the vulnerable and the marginalized and to do good unto them = to do good unto Him.No rituals or superstition-based motions necessary. It's a very humanistic philosophy with Jesus personifying the highest state that the Human can and should strive to achieve while here on this Earth. Christians call it a State of Divine Grace. An atheist/agnostic may prefer to call it a State of Maximum Enlightenment. Putting aside the Virgin Birth, miracles, Resurrection and other faith-based things, that's the essence of the message of Christ to Mankind. Human Enlightenment cannot survive without a true commitment to Social Justice, Liberty and Equality. Without these things the dignity of the Individual is nothing but empty parlor talk leading to a moral and intellectual dead end for all. That's the message that Pope Francis has embraced in The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) and shared with the world. It's also essentially the message that our country's Founding Fathers passed down to us. |
