Bashar Assad praises Nelson Mandela, says hero’s life serves as lesson to ‘oppressors’The baffling message was posted on the Syrian president’s Facebook page FridayBY STEPHEN REX BROWN FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2013, 2:32 PMTyrannical leader Bashar Assad hailed Nelson Mandela Friday as an inspirational freedom fighter whose legacy serves as a lesson — to tyrants.
The delusional message was posted to the Syrian president’s official Facebook page Friday — a day after Mandela’s death at 95 years old triggered remembrances around the globe about the liberation leader’s dignity and strength in the face of apartheid.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was "an inspiration in the values of love and human brotherhood,” read the post, which was accompanied by an image of Mandela and not intended to be ironic.
“His history of struggle has become an inspiration to all the vulnerable peoples of the world, in the expectation that oppressors and aggressors will learn the lesson that in the end it is they who are the losers.”
The bizarre post came the same day Syrian rebels alleged Assad had launched another chemical weapons attack.
Since the civil war began two and a half years ago, over 100,000 people have died. The conflict has splintered much of the country into militia-run territories, some of which are controlled by factions linked to Al Qaeda.
Assad’s crackdown on peaceful protests spurred the all-out war marked by horrific brutality on both sides.
U.S. investigators concluded the Syrian president’s forces launched a chemical weapons attack on the Damascus suburbs in August that killed over 1,400, including women and children. Assad then struck a deal with the U.S. and Western allies to dispose of its chemical weapons stockpile.
