It's a symbol of middle-class lifestyle in the south.

Same way all the elements in NY have their "NY" even if they're not Yankees fans, southern whites have their symbols. Only elitists get offended by the Confederate flag.

Same people are not offended by the rising sun version of the Japanese flag still be used.
