On VFR, you don't need ILS. You need that when it's fogged in, clouded over or otherwise can't see the runway. The red/whites are lights on the runway that let you know if you're over or under the glide slope. Five lights - white or red. You're "on the beam" when they show white-red-white-red-white. Those were apparently not working either, along with the glide slope radio signal also being down.Visual flight rules in effect though, and the pilot could SEE. The other stuff is merely additional ways to win, but in this case not absolutely necessary on a clear day. |
