As we go for inclusiveness, we're also making new problems. If we use"he or she" should we equally use "she or he" to emphasize that we are not making the he superior? This effort also emphasizes aspects of language that may be antiquated. For example, "journey-level" takes care of the "man" part but what about the "journey" part. When I was a working printer I was a journeyman and that meant I could pull my union card and literally "journey" to any union local in the U.S. and Canada, deposit my card and be eligible to work there. So if a "journey-level" person can't "journey" in the classic sense is he really a "journey-something"? |
