The routes were supposedly picked up by some van company, an then you never heard about it again. More recently; when we began discussing the PBL takeover; and I first suggested NYBL come over and pick up the routes to use for the buses it owned; I asked how the routes were doing, and someone told me they are not run at all anymore. So it is just something that fizzed out. The one time I did ride it, there weren't that many people. I think it was related to one of the NJ companies, because there was a bus to Jersey City or somewhere that said Big Apple Express or something like that, and looked nearly identical (I think with some gold on it, and same Flxibles). Not sure if it was connected with Red & Tan, though. |

The NJ company you may be thinking of was called Red Apple Transit and was absorbed into Academy's #22 Hillside operation. It's route ran Hoboken-PABT. If Metro Apple and Red Apple were related Metro Apple might have been the first to become MTAB when #22 decided to stop running its own buses and become a contractor fot NJT. |

IIRC, Metro Apple ran a route as a contract carrier for the NYS Dept of Labor from Court St to the Unemployment office on Main St near the docks. It always had a NYS Dept of labor sign in the lower right of the windshield.Don't know if it was freebie, or you had to show something to get on or the route. |

That was picked up by Varsity, even before Metro Apple cesed running. It had been a showcase of old non-AC fishbowls (but with the back doors sealed up).I uased that once to go apply for a job, and I think you did have to show something. |

I think Metro Apple shut down before Academy absorbed Red Apple into #22 Hillside. Of course, if the companies were related would Academy have picked up Metro Apple's routes and used NJT's buses on them or turned the routes over to Command? |

Yes, Varsity did get the labor shuttle and used ex - Command fishbowls with a/c. and even i of the original RTS`S 353 which became Varsity 754. The only non a/c bus was 235 which Green had and then it sat in the yard as it still does today. Several attempts were made at restoring this bus it was never completed. Currently it is poor shape with little or no windows left and the fact that it has not turned a wheel on its own for about 10 years does not help it. |

Command was all set to get the routes but the entire deal was ended because Command \ Stan Brettschneider wanted mileage money from the end of the routes back to their garage in East New York and the City said no way. Al Manti of Manti transportation already was running the routes with those mini buses of his so they just let him continue to do so. I do not know if he is still operation or not. |

I know there's a company called Bay Ridge Bus that uses a 35 foot BlueBird in a charter set up. I see it down in Lower Manhattan sometimes going by NY Downtown Hospital with a few people on it. I have seen it once in the afternoon around 4 PM or so heading towards the Battery Tunnel.Maybe I go look for it today for the heck of it! |

The non-AC buses I was talking about on Metro Apple were not the same as the one Command had. I don't know what they did with those, but in the end, Metro Apple began getting the ex-TA GM Blitz's, and even some RTS's at the very end. Then, the Varsity labor shuttle got those modified school buses. |

Oh, so that was the whole story. From what I heard, the mini bus operations has ceased, but it was too bad, because again, Arrigoni or someone could have picked those up and continued opration os his buses. He could have moved his whole operation over there, as he was already providing the mobile classrooms for the Boro Park area. (Now I'm seeing those mobile vans scattered all around everywhere owned by others, and only half painted over.) |

Originally they numbered it 704 as seen above, but it was changed to 754 before it ever was used in service. Answer I got was that there was another 704 [ fishbowl ] still running and they wanted to distiguish between the fishbowls and the RTS`S and unlike Private Transportation Varsity / Command did not like having 2 buses with the same numbers. |

I wish I still was able to see whatever image this was, but all of New York Bus Service's Downtown routes ended in 1987. Co-Op City to Downtown service began in 1978 while routes between Parkchester, Pelham Bay, Throgs Neck and Morris Park began in 1985. |

I know this is necroposting, but I know that there are knowledgeable people here, but if this is true, why couldn't Command Bus use the Metro Apple garage in Sunset Park? Or buy a new facility, let the city help with the upgrades and then they now have a valuable real estate holding in a gentrifying part of Brooklyn. |
