LACMTA 9977 ( Ex Foothill Transit Gillig ). Operated under contract by Transportation Concepts.

Adrians drove this bus yesterday ... and yes the wheel was flat :-D

A new feature to our TransiTVs is the bus locator feature. It displays the current location of the bus youre riding on using MS Windows Live Local

Nice pics! Liked the last couple of them with the little tv, those are awesome. NJT should do that.

Beijing's bus system had similar TV screens in some of its newer buses. They constantly displayed safety message cartoons and the like.

Cool to see a Gillig in LA Metro colors. BTW, Arizona State University has the same ex-Foothill Gilligs (if those are 1989 models) but they are still in Foothill colors. I like the Metro Local colors on a Gillig-they look nice. Did Metro get these by trading routes with Foothill Transit, or are these buses just leased?

Also, by the way San Francisco, Washington DC, and New York also have those Snickers ads on their buses. Where I am (Phoenix, AZ) we only have local ads on our buses (and about half do not have ads at all), so we are fortunate enough not to get those ads.

i think these were aquired through auction...not really sure. Transportation Concepts also have some ex-Foothill 1994 Gilligs as well. After TC got their hands on them, they were sent to Complete Coach Works for repainting and tune-up

It looks like they came from Shuttle Bus Leasing according to the color and shape of the tiny sticker below the "#167" which is where the Arizona State (and before that, the Valley Metro Foothill Gilligs) came from. None of them have/had working destination signs. At least LA Metro repainted theirs, Valley Metro just put stickers on them (they had the 1991 Suburbans F250-F263 and ran them in local service while express riders suffered with hard seats on CNG NABIs until our Novabuses arrived) and Arizona State University keeps theirs in Santa Cruz Metro/Foothill Transit hybrid colors (Foothill colors with a gold stripe through the middle of the three blue bands). Arizona State is replacing theirs with Blue Bird Xcel 102s (which even brand new are pieces of crap) and I wonder if they will be leased to LA Metro.

Also, it appears that Krapf's (Crap's, or so I hear) Transit in Philadelphia got their hands on the other 1994 Gilligs from Foothill (I guess from Shuttle Bus Leasing) so these buses can appear anywhere. Wherever anyone is short of buses, these guys can show up. Surprised MUNI hasn't gotten them (whatever happened to their AC Transit Gillig deal?)

One more thing: SBL also leased Hertz buses to Valley Metro and ran them in local service intact (yes, a rental car shuttle in local service, go figure), but I don't know of anyone else who did this. They were really fun to ride (a pain for drivers with no stop request, destination sign or partition behind their seat) but they lasted about 6 months and are now history. Carpeting on the floor of a transit bus is nice...while it lasts.

I don't have a good handle on the term "express" as it applies to LACMTA. I've seen express buses downtown that are painted blue and have "Express" written on the side. But the express buses near me are usually painted orange and have "Local" on the side. Sometimes they are red and of course have "Rapid" on the side. However they are never painted blue and I don't think that they even have express in the rollsign. They also make the exact same stops (no skips) as they used to when they were not "Express". Very strange.

The reason for this is the fact that these blue Express buses are only used on two routes as of now, both of which have an "X" suffix at the end (Routes 450X and 577X are the two). Other routes are not official "Metro Express" routes, and are not official "Metro Local" routes so Metro seems to think that running both Local and Rapid buses on the same route somehow means tha tthe route is express.

Bottom line: A dumb idea by MTA, they should've stuck to just painting the Rapid buses red, and use one color scheme (either the Orange local, or the Blue express, but w/out the local/express identifiers. Even with my very limited knowledge of MTA Operations, I knew that decision would cause problems.

Maybe they should had done both orange and blue for the non-rapid buses unless they get suburbans.
Now why LAMTA no longer use suburbans for their express routes? I could see a few routes that may have some good use of them like the 450X and 577X
