W.B.'s Bus Almanac for April 14th

April 14, 1946 - The Book of Returns to Normalcy

Manhattan, New York
Fifth Avenue Coach Company

Effective as of this date, most bus stops which had been discontinued due to World War II restrictions are restored on most Fifth Avenue Coach bus routes. Thus, bus stops are once again spaced every two blocks as opposed to every four blocks as had been the case during the war, and bus stop stanchions along the curb will indicate stopping points. However, crosstown street bus stop spacing will remain basically the same.

The bus redesigns might increase the spacing of Manhattan bus stops. We shall see. Surprised no Manhattan bus redesign has been announced yet.

Did the WWII removal of bus stops involve actual dismantlement of bus stop signs, or the posting of "This bus stop is not active" signage? It seems that removing those stops may have cost more than it saved in operational costs.

Of course the same question might apply to the forthcoming changes, but those were predicated on improving service time, not saving money.

Don't forget, bus stops in those days were designed differently.

Can you elaborate on that? Did they not have bus stop signs?

As I remember from the early 1050s, most, if not all bus stop signs were portable and on round metal bases so they could be moved with no difficulty at all.

The curb was also marked with yellow paint.

Could plausibly be the service road. Google street view shows a building that is very similar to this on GC and 204.

That's the lane divider, not the sidewalk on the other side of the street.
