Borough Prefix

Posted by Spider-Pig on Mon Sep 23 15:43:45 2024

Why is it that Brooklyn gets the plain B but Bronx uses Bx?

I would enjoy seeing Brooklyn get K. It would be especially fun near places like Ridgewood and Broadway Jct where the Kings routes would meet the Queens routes in numbers.

Unfortunately the trend went in the opposite direction from what your B->K proposal entails. Rather than switching from borough name to county name, buses in Staten Island went from the county name (R) to the borough name (S), an especially poor decision because this conflicts with the Suffolk County prefix designation.

I believe that it was because the Borough of Richmond became the Borough of Staten Island in 1975. Of course, it's still the County of Richmond.

It made sense to change R to S for Staten Island since there is no duplication within the city of the letter “R.” However in the case of Bkln vs Bronx it actually would make sense for the Bronx to use a single “B and Bkln to be rebadged with a “K.”

No doubt to distinguish between the two boroughs.

Prior to 1975, Staten Island's borough name was Richmond, hence the 'R'. It changed thereafter.

I have thought that from a marketing standpoint it sounds better than to call Brooklyn routes Bk 9.
It’s like why the scout changed Rick Gossage’s name to Rich.

Except for the 'SIM' designation for the Staten Island express bus routes. I don't know why 'SM' was not chosen. 'BM','QM' and 'BxM' were chosen for the other boroughs express bus routes.

So that it rolls of the tongue a certain way. SM sounds close enough to SIM.

It's S & M but LOL! Does this mean that after the eventual SI bus redesign the local routes will be 'SI78, SI53, etc?

But then 'BM' means Bowel Movement, for the shitty service.

That's exactly what they will day because they can't cover trips because they are short of buses.
