Queens Redsign Bus Speed

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Tue Jul 23 12:07:35 2024

As previously mentioned, I signed up for the public hearing this Wednesday. One of the tidbits I'll be revealing will be the redesign's scheduled average bus speed.

I've used Wed, 6 March 2024 as the typical weekday to determine the current and redesign average speed from the GTFS's.

For limited/local bus trips (excluding express and SBS routes) the average bus stop spacing will be increased from 852 to 1295 feet. The current average bus speed is 8.63 mph.

Anyone want to speculate what the average bus speed would have been using the Redesign Schedule?

You will not find this information on any of the Final Report v8's 590 pages.

Guess until after Wednesday. :=)

I'm guessing extremely similar, and if so they are scheduling like that in order to increase reliability. The idea is that buses would be less late. Basically the schedule is padded.

If the speed went down then that means they really want to brag about reliability to the exclusion of all else.

I'm not saying I like this approach, but I'm pretty sure that's their plan.

You're braver than the MTA. :=)

For extra credit: the average Queens local bus speed is 9.29 mph on Saturday and 9.74 mph on Sunday. What would be the average Saturday and Sunday average bus speeds with the Queens Redesign?

Was I close? I had no special information when I guessed.

I would then round it up to 10 MPH for those weekend days.

You're too high. The Queens Bus Redesign will increase average bus speed from 8.63 to 8.77 mph on a typical Wednesday (6 March 2024).

Actually you are going in the wrong direction.

On a typical Saturday: bus stop spacing increased from 838 ft to 1307 ft, while average bus speed decreased from 9.29 to 9.25 mph

On a typical Sunday: bus stop spacing increased from 840 to 1312 ft, while average bus speed decreased from 9.74 to 9.73 mph.
