Basically the 50xx buses were 1966, 51xx were 1968, 52xx were 1971 and 53xx were 1972-73 5309s. Some were 5310s which I suppose had higher 55xx numbers. The first batch of 5501-5527 or so were probably 1973 5309s.I don’t have any proof but it seemed the local buses had that hump on the roof for the a/c. I really only remember the 51xx buses not having the hump. But they seemed to have a/c. |

According to them the 50xx were 1967s.I said ‘66 because I remember the registration receipt over the driver in a little card holder that said 5018 was a 1966. The list says it was originally #8109. I’ll double check omt list. |

I was surprised after the #5567 fiasco on the X17 route where a customer was blinded the express buses moved from Yukon off to MCH,100th,KB and UP. If they were Grummans, they would have been pulled. |

That’s the only bus in the 50xx series I recall riding on. Because when I started high school in 1990 that was a Manhattan depot bus. Gleason has 5500-27. Flatbush had buses in the upper 53xxs. On the occasion trip in the city I’d see those 50xx buses and 52xxs. |

Yes, in Manhattan OHS had all of the '66 5303AC (5000-5022), and some 5200 '70/71 5305As. HUD had '72/'73 5309A (5300 to about 5350), and AMS had the lower 5100 series '68 5305As. |

I still remember (I think fall '84) when I saw one for the first time. At the time I was in College, and saw a 5300 series 5309A on the M26 (now M23), and was shocked. I think I saw one of the 50XX buses on the M101 and again was quite suprised. IIRC, the TA sent 350 buses to Blitz. Here's a list with original bus numbers on the TTMG site |

On the M15 Limited of all routes. I think I rode a newer Blitz on the M9 during that same trip. The was the last time I saw/rode any of the Blitzes. My next visit was June 1994, and while I've heard there were still a few left at that point, I never saw any.Another milstone during that trip was seeing (but not riding) a train of R-30s. On the C which I saw from an A (R-44) on Fulton St. Those were definitely gone by 1994. |

I would imagine it was a successful program when all was said and done. I don’t know of any issues with them except when 5229 lost a brake pedal and had to run into a scaffold to stop. When the 80xx RTS came on the scene in 1991, it was the final kiss of death for unrebuilt new looks and Flxibles. And the subsequent orders of RTS took care of those blitz buses. So by 1994 it was probably hard to find them. I spent a good deal of time in Broad Channel in the summer from 1989 to 1993 and had a good view of the A line. The main trains I remember seeing were R30s. But by 1993 no more. |
