Carey Transportation buses |

Posted by DieselBusFan on Wed Apr 8 13:25:50 2020 Anybody (besides me) remember Carey Transportation? I think that they had big green Flxible buses and provided service to the NY airports. This was late 1940s and early 1950s. Please heed all the health advisories and be thankful for those who are still req'd to work (health care, transit, food service, cleaning and sanitizing crews). |

At one time they also ran the Airline Connection bus at JFK (at least until 1968). I believe that they lost the airport franchise in 1997. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Carey was purchased by Greyhound in the late 60s and ran in their paint scheme for a number of years alongside Walters transit and Gray Line NYC, then Carey was sold to Connecticut Limousine. |

I vaguely remember some what my father called "torpedo buses", may have been GM's though. But I only remember them as blue and white running between Jamaica Station and "Idlewild".All the rest were green trimmed GM Parlors. |

Originally Carey had Flxible Clippers, then Starlines. After that they bought GM 4104 and 4106 Parlor Coaches. The company was the sold to Greyhound and the color scheme changed from green toe Greyhound blue & white. |

I remember them well when they were owned by Greyhound and sported the same Red/white/blue, and later when it was sold... The red stripe became a lighter shade of blue. I also remember in the early 1980s when Carey rec'd about 20 state-owned MC9s that were numbered something like PA1-PA20 along with a boarding area at PABT. It was street level in the north wing at 42nd St just west of 8th Ave. Sadly, in their last years maintenance at Carey went down, and the buses generally looked and sounded rather shabby. |

Carey joined the rest of the country buying the GMC 4104, one of the reasons it was the best selling single coach model until the MCI MC-9 finally surpassed it.

In the summer of 1967, Carey ran a useful service connecting JFK, Staten Island (Bradley Avenue exit), and Newark Airport. It was one of the few times that a traveler could use direct airport bus service from JFK to Staten Island. I presume it got dropped for lack of patronage. I used it once that summer, as that was during Expo 67 in Montreal. |

I could have sworn I saw that type of bus at Jamaica Station along Sutphin a few times in the early 1960's, with the smaller windows and tucked in windshield like an Old Look, which they had also.Sunrise Coach in Greenport had a couple of them also (#104 and #105) |
