Posted by ro_jo on Fri Jan 12 13:24:43 2018

Sorry, last night's post didn't work.
My friend just showed me this picture from the 86th st (1) station. What's going on here?

Back in the 80s, for financing purposes, buses were purchased by the PA and leased to TA and OA. This arrangement was reflected on the buses themselves, although that art doesn't portray the wording accurately. The bus numbers were all prefixed with PA as depicted.

MSBA and NJT had buses leased from the PANYNJ as well.

I remember that era very well - when "Purchased by The Port Authority of NY & NJ - Leased to ______________" was ubiquitous on TA, OA and NJT buses (never really saw MSBA buses with that notice, though I believe it). Many had Gulton Luminator Division electronic front and side destination signs (15 5x7 characters).

MSBA's Flxible Metros with fleet numbers PA1000- PA1033 were the leased units. I don't recall offhand seeing the lease notice on those buses as well yet here is a photo of PA1013 what appears to be the notice to the right of the front wheel, bottom of the bus.

It clearly says "Purchased by the Port Authority of NY and NJ"

Yup! I think it was 20 MC-9. I remember those buses well. They were painted differently (Darker blue w/orange) from other Carey Buses

Now that you've showed that pic, it's slowly coming back to me. The huge rollsigns in particular, on the top of the front of the bus.

Some of the LIRR M3 cars were also obtained that way and had the same wording.
