I remember riding them on the M6 in the early 1980's from Thomas & Church up to Herald Square. Nice seats. So much nicer than the gross, noisy, dirty, IRT cars on the 2 & 3. |

I was in High School at the time. AMS had a bunch of the WMATA buses (FFS also has some of those at MABSTOA). I used to chase down these buses on the M100 which operated from AMS in those days. I'm pretty sure all of the WMATA Flxibles operated from only NYCTA depots (Edgewater). |

I remember the convoys coming up the NJ Turnpike... they ran at night to not get caught in too much traffic. A friend who was in the NJ National Guard drove one of the WMATA Fish and said his bus had no lights whatsoever... he said he just hugged the back of the bus in front of him from DC all the way to NYC.By the way, the red/white number in the window was the temporary MTA fleet number - they didn't go by the WMATA fleet numbers, since they overlapped with existing MTA numbers. |

I saw them but never rode one here in New York (I did while in DC). Most were in WMATA colors, but the TA did have plenty of units in the old DC Transit colors as well. All of the Flxibles I saw were in the WMATA red, white and blue, and I believe all of them were assigned to Staten Island. |

I was living in L. A. then, where we had our own issues (there were only had 230 of them, but fortunately, SCRTD had starting taking in the first buses of a massive order of GMC RTS-04s the week before the Grummans went away. By mid-January, between the RTS and some older buses brought out of storage, they were back up to full staffing. Grummans started coming back in service around May in LA. I was in NYC for about a week in August and got to ride one of the WMATA Flxibles, somewhere in Manhattan, I don't remember where exactly. I guess they hung around even though some of the Grummans were back in service in NYC when I was there. |

I rode lots of them and they always seemed to be as not far gone as similar TA buses. These buses were actually being stored as part of WMATA's contingency fleet. I remember reading that some of the buses weren't doing too well enroute and were sent back to DC. |

Yes, some did come back out of reserve, a few may have not yet been retired on 12/14/80 when the Grummans were sidelined, and just continued running. In the spring of 1981, I rode 2167, a 1954 TDH-4801 originally delivered to Metropolitan Coach Lines (which took over Pacific Electric bus (and rail) lines in 1953), and later ran for LAMTA and then RTD. That was the last Old Look bus I ever rode. The Old Looks were retired for good in the summer of 1981, when all 940 RTS-04s were in service and a good amount of the Grummans were back. Some RTD Old Looks went up to San Francisco, where Muni was having a motor coach shortage at that time. I don't know how long they ran there. |

Right, and interesting enough WMATA decided to continue using the 4000 number after they had repainted the bus into their own color scheme. I'm told that WMATA did leave the perimeter seating in place. I heard that the GMC was one of the 8800 series X buses. |
