Well I am very surprised, especially with the RVC and Freeport shuttles" but some will change their routes slightly and use smaller “Flexibus” vehicles." My Goodness. I suggested just that and everyone said it was a bad idea, most of the cost is the driver, and they wanted uniform equipment. |

Maybe they think using a "Flexibus" will be more cost effective so it wouldn't require much funds to run those routes past June 2017, or maybe they want to show that the routes really aren'the worth it by using the "Flexibus". |

Someplace in my boxes of slides I have photos of the vans used on N73 for a few years. As the streetcar companies of 1910 discovered, you special fleets become a nuisance on route assignments.--- My worry is that the passengers who used to ride the north-south routes to Hicksville have been permanently lost to other methods of getting there. Taxis are too expensive, but some people can find friends who will drive them somewhere. |

Those weren't considered a cut, so no.I mean, the n21 riders got their weekend service back, and the service actually runs a little bit later along Northern Blvd than it used to, so if anything, it's a service addition. |

I don'the think Suffolk would agree to pay a contribution for the N19.Also Suffolk and Nassau have a history of disagreeing about contributions for bus service, if I remember correctly an argument between the two counties over contributions for MSBA operating the S40 in the 70's led four years of poor service from Alert Coach. |

With the split, you have the option of transferring at Northern & Middle Neck Road, rather than looping in and out of Great Neck. And delays on one half of the route don't affect service on the other half. Somebody on another forum mentioned that since the split, there have no longer been delays of 30-40 minutes waiting for a bus in Flushing to come all the way from Hicksville. For example, if a bus comes 10 minutes late during rush hour, the buses run every 10 minutes anyway for the most part. So you get to send the bus out, and passengers can simply take the next bus. |

Since Suffolk extended the S20 to Montauk Hwy, I bout Nassau or NICE considered restoring the Sunrise Mall-Babylon RR portion of the N19.Why should Suffolk pay Nassau for the N19 to go to Babylon RR? Suffolk doesn't pay Nassau for the other routes that enter Suffolk, and to my knowledge Nassau never payed Suffolk when the S20 use to go to the Kohl's in Massapequa Park. |

Yeah Suffolk turned the S20 into a short of loop and extended it to part of Montauk Hwy that was covered by the N19. One assumes it was done to take the place of the N19, to my knowledge nothing was ever publicly said about why the change was done. |

The S20 service adjustment was a quick jury-rigged response. I doubt that any serious effort had been undertaken as to the optimal permanent solution, be it the implementation of an N19 replacement (or N19 restoration), S40 extension, outright abandonment, or the S20 adjustment that was actually implemented. I would watch here for future developments.Likewise, the N72 ought to be discontinued in the absence of financial contribution by Suffolk County (or unless it can be shown that, on the margin, the N72 operation to Babylon is profitable. The reason that Suffolk County should pay for the N19 service between Sunrise Mall and Babylon is that is a Suffolk County transit service. True, this transit service does cross the county line to enter Sunrise Mall, but that is simply because it is a traffic generator for passengers traveling to and from Suffolk County desire to patronize. That same reasoning can be used to justify the operation of N70 and N79 into Suffolk County, i.e., that these two routes are effectively providing service to traffic generators within Suffolk County to Nassau County passengers, rather than providing service within Suffolk County. |

After the N19 ran Freeport - Patchogue under Utility Lines, MSBA took it over, and for some reason drew their own jurisdictional line at Babylon rather than at Sunrise Mall, Massapequa Park, or Amityville.I do remember the early S40 operation. They used 2nd hand, later model ex-Schenck Fishbowl transits (white with red stripe) that were not offered for sale to MSBA. |

Most of the passengers riding the n72 to Babylon come from Nassau County. A standalone route running from say, Babylon to Farmingdale would get much lower ridership (since not only does it force passengers along Hempstead Turnpike to transfer, but it also forces a double transfer for anybody who needs to connect to another route. For example, the n49 to reach Hicksville). |

What is it in Babylon that would draw Nassau County residents, more so than Suffolk County residents traveling locally? If there were such a traffic draw, as I think is the case with the NICE bus service to Walt Whitman Mall, then I might well have second thoughts about the N72. (An interesting side note: I understand that on route N20, between Flushing and Great Neck, more passengers reside in New York City than Nassau County.) |

Since MSBA took over the entire operation, all the way to Patchogue, the N19 division at Babylon might have been the result of just having two shorter, and presumably more reliable, bus routes, in which case the choice of Babylon as the division point was somewhat arbitrary (but it would create a common terminal for three MSBA routes). It might also have reflected difference levels of demand and service for the two halves of the N19. Nit the point is that the division was probably not related to allocation of subsidy requirements between Nassau and Suffolk Counties, but rather for operational reasons. |

The transfers to all the other bus routes, as well as the LIRR attract customers. Not sure if it's necessarily Suffolk County or Nassau County residents (for all I know, some of them could be Suffolk residents traveling to points along Hempstead Turnpike, coming off the SCT buses).Along Route 109, a lot of it is a wide highway, which leads to a lot of dead mileage within Suffolk. |

Westfield, the Australian owner of Sunrise Mall, runs prosperous malls in other places, including Sarasota, Florida. However, if I need to kill time at Sunrise Mall while my wife shops in one department store, I walk both levels and attempt to count the empty stores. Westfield uses various camouflage to hide unleased space, but I easily hit a dozen. On Sunrise Hwy, when I look at the N54/N55 buses heading to/from Sunrise Mall, I rarely count more than five passengers, no matter the time of day.--- People ride transit to get to work, to reach county offices (as the welfare office at 60 Charles Lindbergh on N16), to shop, plus other reasons. I see workers in the early morning fanning out from Hempstead to employment in Seaford and Massapequa, but I don't see big ridership on the routes into Sunrise Mall. It puzzles me. |

NICE -- "Flexi-Bus" Service |
|
Posted by Charles G on Sat Apr 2 08:46:45 2016, in response to NICE Bus cuts to be mostly restored in June 2016, official says, posted by gOld_12th on Sun Mar 27 09:49:54 2016. Excerpted from an article in the Long Island HeraldMost of the lines will return to their pre-elimination service levels, Nevin explained. But the N2/8 an N14/17 routes will change slightly. He noted that these two lines, along with the N62 and N73/74, will employ what’s called “flexi-bus” service. Kraus explained that it is not possible to restore every line stop by stop. The flexible service system, however, will allow NICE to operate some parts of some low-volume routes, and offer some “on-demand” service. “Providing more service on busier routes, where resources benefit more riders, is preferable to providing service that is far more costly on underutilized routes,” he said. Does anyone know more about this or how this works? Either in general in other systems or specific to NICE would be of interest to me. |

Some clues here.Looks like it's all about only running the bus where they know people will be on board. How people inform the agency they will be there to board I guess is up to the particular agency. For the 73/74 I wonder if the idea is to try to streamline the buses in the Levittown area so they aren't going "off-course" when there's no need to. For the 14 and 17, it may be run the 17 and only extend around the 14 loop to the extent that there is demand. For the 62 it would probably be run a bus when people want it. What is left open in some cases is do you run a bus if one person asks for one, and how this is helpful if you have to have buses ready anyway. When will be the latest before the trip that someone can "ring" for the bus? And how do you "ring?" |

Thanks -- it seems most of those routes are quite long, running through many villages. By comparison some of the routes that NICE is going to convert are quite short. I think the N14 probably had only 15 stops on the entire loop. This ought to be interesting to watch. |

Yes, I too got the impression that this system is good for very spread out areas, not so much a town or a group of two towns that are probably going to just link you to fixed-route service, as would be the case for the NICE routes in question. I also get the impression that where this system is used, ridership is low enough that you can basically ask for any corner in the town, not necessarily where the old fixed-route used to be.But the idea of "applying" for a bus I think will be a huge problem for some people. For some people 1 or 2 "rejections" will be enough for them to stop considering the service. |

They'll probably require you to reserve a trip say, an hour in advance. Then, they'll tell the operator "Alright, the next hour, you're going to go to points A, B, C, and D"Some systems also allow "standing reservations" so if somebody needs say, an 8AM bus every day, they just reserve it automatically so the person doesn't have the hassle of calling them in advance. (I know if I wake up 10 minutes late, anything off my mind is one less hassle to deal with) |
