Bx1 and Bx2 on the Boulevard of Dreams |
|
Posted by Joe on Tue May 12 14:16:08 2015 Looking at BusChat this morning, I hoped to find something other than the Bites from Sheepshead.--- If I may go to the other end of creation, it's remarkable that the Bx1 and Bx2 have stayed the same for almost 90 years, my guess. Earliest photos show the route number without the prefix. I recall another photo showing the upper deck with a central longitudinal bench over the heads of passengers of the aisle below. My memory begins with the 1940's, when Bx1 and its rather new GM's loaded eastbound on West 231 St., then climbed Kingsbridge Heights via Albany Crescent and Heath Avenue, passing the old 50th precinct station house. At the top, the Bx2, which we never rode, began. --- Bx1 u-turned at 138th Street, and loaded near the Mott Haven station of the New York Central. Bx2 went to The Hub. Both now go to 138th and 3rd. --- A few years back, both northbound routes lost their passage rights in front of DeWitt Clinton HS. They now must detour to Mosholu Pkwy for a long block and then join Sedgwick Avenue at a crazy intersection. --- Concourse buses have their allure. A passenger may remain at street level without descending into the mazes and unprotected corners of the D train station. When you ride it, the bus seems slow, but the D also seems to lumber along without rapid transit speed. --- I recommend the book, "Boulevard of Dreams," by Constance Rosenblum. |

I have fond memories of living on the Concourse and watching the Surface Transportation B1 and B2 buses pass regularly. I didn't know that they no longer are permitted to pass in front of De Witt Clinton, my alma mater.During my youth I clearly recall the old pre-war Macks (series 600 I believe) were always used. I don't remember that they ever used any new GMs on either line until the MABSTOA days. Right after the end of the war they purchased a fleet of new Macks to replace the old, tired ones. The new ones had red sides and tops, with the familiar cream window band. |

I lived in the "Hub" and either took the IRT or the bus to school. When I had early classes, it was the train. The Bx2 was a Kingsbridge bus; the Bx 1 Coliseum. Those first early a.m. runs on the Bx2 out of 150th street were run by Coliseum buses, which would later turn into Bx1s. I recall seeing Coliseum's GM 4509, 4510s, 5104s and 5106s doing the early a.m. runs, as they passed my apartment on Courtlandt Ave. They would just about get to Mosholu Pkwy when I was arriving by train. jrc |

We lived on the Concourse until I was 14, at which time we moved to New Jersey. I transferred to the NJ High School, only to find out that I'd graduate a year later because of the sequence of courses they offered. So I re-registered back at Clinton for my final year, using my sister's address in the Bronx. Every morning I'd catch the Intercity #30 at 6:30 AM from Passaic to Manhattan. I'd typically have to wait for the Erie train from Chicago pass by as I walked to the bus stop. Ironically, the only time I got to school late was the one time a slept at my sister's. That morning there was a train wreck at Mosholu Parkway and Jerome Avenue. Two trains collided, and all the northbound buses were jammed, since the trains were out of service. Gee--I'm really dating myself, huh? |

Restatement: Southbound Bx1 and Bx2 can use the one-way service road in front of DeWitt Clinton. Because that street was made one-way a few years ago, northbounds make an odd zig-zag onto and off Mosholu Pkwy. |

Even though Surface Transportation was a subsidiary of TARS (Third Avenue Railway System), free transfers between the original Bronx bus lines and the remaining streetcars (1946 or so) were not offered. Trolley transfers were good on trolleys, as listed on the three-part ticket. TARS had learned its lesson, and the bus routes weren't going to offer free transfers to intersecting trolleys. Surface bus transfers were valid on other Surface bus lines, but there weren't that many intersections of routes, as some of the original bus lines were mere feeders, isolated. I never did it, but I think you could transfer from the Bx1 to the Bx10 (Riverdale) at West 231st Street and Broadway, but you could not transfer to the C car, the present Bx9.--- With the Metrocard, a passenger can sometimes work a one-fare round trip on routes that meet twice. On the Concourse, of course, one can ride south on the bus and use the Metrocard within 2h:18 to return home on the D. |

If I recall back in Surface Transit days, the Bx1 and Bx2 along with some other routes I can’t recall at the moment operated out of a depot called “Central Bronx” which was actually in the area of 126 St and 2 Av in Manhattan and was taken over by the city when MaBSTOA was created in 1962. Prior to that the NYCTA “Manhattan Garage” was merely an open lot near the Central Bronx garage where its buses were stored. When the city and TA took over, it claimed the former STS garage to store and maintain NYCTA buses and the former STS, now MaBSTOA, buses were reassigned to other depots. |

This brings up another interesting question: It's not possible now because of development at the extreme southern end of Washington Avenue that resulted in a block being de-mapped and the last block being orphaned, but were Third and Washington Avenues not a one-way pair at the time? Third Ave become one-way (N/B) in 1973 when the Third Ave el service ended/Bx55 service started. The new Bx55 and Bx29 operated N/B on Third Ave, and S/B on Washington Ave. The Bx55 buses going to/from 199th St Hub also operated via Melrose Ave between 149th and 161st Streets.
