That was the start of a great deal for NJT when they got hundreds of those buses at a huge discount. They ran until the early 2000's for NJT until 1999/2000 RTS's came in. |

NYCTA couldn't operate the Grumman 870's on the Staten Island side of the Bayonne, Goethals and Outerbridge Crossing, but NJ Transit could operate them on the Jersey side. |

I know but what I'm thinking of is the '77 Flxs that were run out of town with plenty of life left in them. I always suspected they met their demise for lack of lifts and the desire to boast a 100 percent accessible fleet. |

If memory serves, 200 of the Grummans had wheelchair lifts, and yes, they were front door units. All of NYCT's RTS buses had wheelchair lifts, and they were all rear door units. NYCT's early experience with the front door lifts (on the Grummans) turned the agency off of front door lifts for many years. The front door lifts on the Grummans took a pounding from the roads and from accidents in the area of the front door.David |

I'm certainly not picking on you but just throwing ideas out there. Everyone is so poetic about those things but had they not been pulled they would have done 11, 12, or maybe 13 years. However, if the order was successful that could have lead to more contracts with that Metro. |

Grumman repaired the buses in 1980-81 and they went back into service in New York City. The 870's were pulled off the road in NYC for good in 1984 by new TA president David Gunn after a bus caught fire in Manhattan. According to Dr. Robert Ebert's history of Flxible, the fire was later found to have been caused by deferred maintenance and was unrelated to the early defective design. |

These buses were those undelivered buses when the TA first pulled the Grumman 870s from the streets. They (along with those for the DOT Privates) rec'd their A-frame retrofit prior to delivery. |

Yeah, the feds knew this too, which is why they weren't at all buying the TA's BS excuses. It was clear that the A-frame problem was that of Grumman, but the TA was intent on making Grumman the scapegoat for their own maintenance shortcomings. |

I believe this number (2,656) is the total number of 870s that had to have their A-frame retrofitted, but not the number of buses actually pulled from service. Some of those buses had not yet been delivered including the final 200 (the lift-equipped buses) for NYCTA, and the PBL's 870s. |

My understanding is that CTA and other transit agencies were interested in the RTS, but wanted no part of a rear door lift. The RTS design was modified to create the 08 (and later WFD) series which could accomodate a front door lift. |

NYCTA lost two WMATA buses (and some of their own) when part of the Edgewater Depot pier collapsed into the harbor. Since they lost one WMATA Flxible, and GMC new look... When the WMATA buses were returned... NYCTA "reimbursed" WMATA with two of their own buses - A GMC T6H-5305A, and a '70 Flxible. I think it was #8800, and #4000. WMATA painted the buses into their color scheme, but left the seating as is for service. |
