Mayor Bill de Blasio signed legislation Monday that reduces the limit from 35 mph starting Nov. 7. The measure is part of the mayor's ambitious traffic safety plan known as "Vision Zero" to reduce pedestrian and driver deaths. De Blasio stood with other elected officials and relatives of accident victims when he signed the bill on a street corner on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He said the survival rate of an accident at 25 mph is much higher than at 35 mph. Ninety percent of the city's streets will have a speed limit of 25 mph or lower. I have always heard and even drive usually about 5-10 miles over the limit but I was once in a car where the driver was doing 60 in a 55 and we got pulled over. He argued even stating how cars were going passed him and it was unfair yards and the cop just said I caught you going over the speed limit. So who knows... |

Do you know if the red light cameras are really accurate to 1/10 or 1/100 of a second? Why is there no grace allowed there? It is so easy to misjudge the length of a yellow since they can vary from 2 to 4 seconds in NYC. Most are three, however, but you ne'er know. It just doesn't seem fair. I have always wondered if the cameras even go off if someone goes through a red 10 seconds after it turns red or if they are just programmed to catch those who miss the amber by a fraction of a second. |

Here it is again. Here it is again. Official sources also say that the yellow is always at least 3 seconds, though I agree that in some spots it definitely seems faster (don't know if it really is or not). And it would only exceed 3 seconds where the speed limit is higher than the city norm. The red light cameras photograph you going through the red light. They show the red light before you enter the intersection and then while you are in the intersection. It doesn't really matter how accurate they are because the evidence is based on photography. For speed cameras and, to an extent, bus lane cameras, I'm a little weary however. |

Your question about someone stopping and then proceeding through a red light (much later) is an interesting one, however. I believe the cameras are triggered by an approaching vehicle that the system expects not to be able to beat the light. In that case the "field" is activated and a photograph taken once the vehicle reaches the intersection (the "field" is disrupted) and then while it is in the middle of the intersection (to prove that a full, illegal maneuver took place). However, I'm not sure if the field remains activated such that a car that is stopped at a red light can start up again and go through. I would imagine that the system could get confused by cross-traffic on their green.You can read up on this stuff though. Search the web and just look for official sources from the manufacturers (not just some guy complaining about his ticket). |

Theoretically you should never have to "slam" on your brakes, though. When the light turns yellow you make a decision to either stop (with normal braking power) or not to stop. The decision is based on whether stopping with normal braking power is possible before the intersection. That method has worked fine for me. If someone behind you can't handle the fact that you used normal braking power to stop, then I'd be afraid to stop anywhere.The important thing is to not second-guess. Make a decision and stick with it. Another important detail is that you are at least somewhat close to the speed limit as you approach the intersection. If you're going way over, then the decision is no longer based on whether you can stop with normal braking power but rather if you can beat the light. |

I had a backup driver helping me on the second road trip to Miami. I had my backup driver took over the wheel so I can get some nocturnal rest for the day run. When I woke up, we were pulled over by a VA State Trooper because my backup driver was clocked at 82 MPH - - 12 MPH over the 70 MPH limit. |

On Woodhaven Blvd even if you are going the speed limit, you do have to slam on your brakes to stop if you are near the intersection or you may get a ticket from a red light camera if you decide to go through. The yellows are just too short to come to a normal stop if you are in the wrong place (that is too close to the intersection) when the yellow comes on. |
