Q58 mid-day: now every 7.5 minutes.

Proposed: every 8 minutes.

I was hoping for all day Limited M-F since it's always been all day on weekends, not M-F mid-day, thus confusing to passengers, but with this it will not happen now.

i don't think it had little affected... express bus ridership is up about 10% (Nov 12-Nov 13) for NYCT. But on MTA Bus express is down about 5% (Nov 12-Nov 13 period).

It looks like they are cutting the AM peak service on the B46 by 50%. Dont you need a public hearing for that big of a change? Looks like more dollar vans will be coming.

I thought they were adding B44 local service or did that happen already?

They were suppose to contact to local community boards or local politicians for schedule change information issues.

Unless you're looking at Staten Island ridership, it's hard to tell. I can tell you I'm experiencing more standing loads in the PM.

If those numbers are perfectly exact, it means 60 buses per hour comes down to 40, a one-third cut.

But those numbers probably aren't exact but rounded to the nearest half-minute, suggesting the possibility that the cut is even less significant.

Currently, I count 51 B46 buses leaving northbound from 7a.m. to 7:59a.m. at the Ave H / Utica stop. They rounded that to a bus every minute. If they cut it down to, say, 48 buses for that hour, the rounding would be closer to every 1.5 minutes than to every 1 minute.

So it can conceivably be a very tiny change. And it probably is, because the loading percentage changes only slightly.

It dropped in 2009, but we are entering another downward leg. Holiday shopping spending was the lowest since 2008. I think we all remember 2008.

Are those buses on time? SI buses always have to fight to stay on time in the PM. The X17J could run fewer buses if they could stay on time, but they have a lot of trouble doing so.

For what it's worth, they mention the Q66 will see its headways decreased to 3.8 minutes in the AM rush. Unless they use a different standard for NYCT vs. MTA Bus with regards to rounding. (Because like you said, if the loading guidelines only change slightly, it doesn't look like a 1/3 cut in service)

@BrooklynBus: I think that might apply to service overall (so if the overall number of buses on the B46 were to be cut by 50%, that would require a hearing, but if you're removing a few buses in the AM rush, that probably doesn't require a hearing).

Though certain things don't require a hearing that probably should. (For instance, if you change the route length by more than 25%, you don't need a hearing, but if that 25% has a large impact on one neighborhood, then that should require a hearing. (The same thing for the span changes)

Yeah. I'll never understand how I can wait for the 17J for 40 minutes, and see multiple 30s, 22s, and 31s. But when the 17 finally shows up, the driver says that traffic from Staten Island was bad. If it was so bad, why are all the OTHER routes on time?

That's still a capacity increase...240 vs 200 feet of bus.

Luckily these headways are small enough that they shouldn't really make a big difference. If they went from, say, 10 to 15min, that wouldn't be so nice.

Note that midday x27 and x28 loads only differ by a few percentage points when the x27 has twice the service. I knew it was busier, but not by this much!

Some guys leave earlier than others, despite not being paid for the extra time. The BQE is always a crap shoot in the afternoon because of congestion near the Battery Tunnel.

You are not saying if it's AM or PM.

AM: if the 17J you waited for 40 minutes had a previous trip, yes, maybe he got tied up in traffic on his first trip in or on his d/h back to Staten Island.

PM: if the bus had to go in service or d/h from Staten Island to Manhattan, yes traffic is a possibility, whereas if those 30's, 22's and 31's were laid up all day at Quill and just pulled out, these would be subject to fewer traffic delays.

How long did it take to figure out that the Bx16 is a very busy feeder route. Not as busy as the B46 in Brooklyn but enough to realize that more service is needed in the morning rush and after 8 PM.

FWIW, the last time they made a change to the B46, they basically took the same number of buses, but had more of them start at Avenue H. (So they changed it from 1.5 minutes to a minute, but the area south of Avenue H saw a slight headway increase)
