Orion VII turns 10 in NYCT! |
|
Posted by R62CNG on Sun Aug 11 18:50:39 2013 Anyone remember when the Orion VII OGs CNGs and hybrids first arrived? I did, and I was glad when they replaced the old GMC and non-repowered TMC RTS's. |

Oh god, I have nightmares of those GMC RTSes... they may well be the only piece of retired transit equipment that I would go out of my way to avoid if one ever showed up again. The original seating plan of the O7 (with the two rows of forward facing seats in the rear section instead of more sideways seats) had me happy about the O7s. Now since for most of them it is not possible to sit facing forward in the high up section with a clear window [the flag wrap prevents the rear row from serving this purpose], they are solidly "meh" buses to me. |

I remember well seeing these buses as they first arrived and entered service. It's still amazes me how the arrival of the O7's coupled with the growing use of artics have all but ended the reign of the RTS in Manhattan. |

The first one was road tested here in NYC, but didn't run in passenger service. That bus had the original Orion 7 look, which didn't have the rounded drivers window. The second unit which did test in passenger service out of Mother Clara Hale and later went down to SEPTA ended up back at Orion and became a demo. Because of the mileage of that unit, another 6365 was built and shipped to the MTA between buses 6487 and 6488. If you look at 6365, its body lines are closer to the 6490 and up batch than the 6366-6489 batch of the order. |

Nope, but all of this is proven in the Orion Bus Production list for which I have a hard print copy of via VIN numbers and such. Also, I was around for this at the time. The 7560 we have is also the second 7560, the first 7560 went back to Orion as well and became a demo. |

I got a few chances to ride the original #7560, when it was tested at Gun Hill Depot on the Bx28. It ran around the 1st quarter of 2002 at GH (maybe a little longer than that), then transferred over to Jackie Gleason. Never saw it since then. I actually liked the front exterior of that bus compared to the one that replaced it later. |

Actually, looking at the last picture, the body lines are exactly the way they were when 6365 and 7560 came out. That didn't change, just the front grille. They never touched the roofline on either bus. |

In fact its 95% of the time it was at Gun Hill was spent on the Bx28.The second 7560 of course spent its entire life at JG. |

I also heard on Transit Talk, that it wasn't at JG for long. One of it's features was a public address system, which announced the bus stops. There was for example, 'NEXT STOP, DREISER LOOP'. Of course, when the bus was transferred to JG, that feature was disabled, since the JG routes were not programmed into the unit. Shame it didn't last too long. |
