The commuter bus lanes along Route 9 in Old Bridge are temporarily off limits to buses following an accident nearly two weeks ago that sent dozens of adults to area hospitals.

On Monday, Mayor Owen Henry said he was notified by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office over the weekend not to allow commuter buses to use the bus lanes because there are no regulations for travel in those lanes.

Messages left for the Prosecutor’s Office spokesman were not returned by deadline.

Henry said the only regulations for the bus lanes are that they be used by buses Monday through Friday. He said the northbound bus lanes are to be used for the morning commute and the southbound bus lanes for the evening commute.

“We can’t find anything else regarding travel in those lanes,” said Henry, who has been in touch with the state Department of Transportation to evaluate the speed limit for the bus lanes and develop regulations and standards for those lanes.

Messages left for the state DOT spokesman were not returned by deadline.

Henry said he is hoping to have the issued cleared up soon so the bus lanes can be reopened.

Both Academy Bus Co. and NJ Transit have been notified of the restriction and have been asked to inform their riders about the change.

Henry said the restriction banning buses from the bus lanes went into effect Monday; because of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, traffic was very light. He said police reported seeing one or two buses in the bus lanes, but most buses did not use them.

He said he is hoping that the closed bus lanes will not cause too much of an inconvenience for travelers when normal weekday traffic resumes this morning.

Not sure I get it. What, do they not have information posted about them being bus only lanes?

I heard thats there more to this. I can't saw what for now, but I think buses have been cough doing other thing in that lane. My wife said all Academy Bus drivers had to sing a letter saying if they are cough in the lane they will be fired NQA.

I think the issue is that the DOT never established any rules or regulations regarding the use of the bus lane (speed limit, right of way, etc), other than the hours of which they can be used. At least that's what I got out of the article.

The question is HOW the Prosecutors Office orders this rather than NJDOT.

Then instead of closing the lanes, why don't DOT establish those rules NOW so traffic and the bus lanes WOULD continue? Ass backwards thinking, IMO.

IAWTP. Traffic issues should be a DOT issue, not the Prosecutor's Office, unless a CRIME was committed. Where's the CRIME?

That's what they're doing. The shut down is only temporarly until they establish guidelines.
