Where is Shorehaven |
|
Posted by nostalgia on Mon Nov 19 21:09:16 2012 I have a book of MABSTOA rollsign destinations from the 1960s. West Farms depot shows routes 1, 2, and 3 going to Shorehaven without a return destination, which doesn't make any sense. Where is Shorehaven? (Somebody suggested it was the condo at Clason Point.) |

It was a beach club near the outer end of Soundview Avenue. I used to live near there in the 60's and would see the buses going to the beach club. There were at least three routes and all carried the destination of Shorehaven but I never knew were they originated. There also was a beach club on Castle Hill Avenue but it was smaller and only served by the Bx -13 Castle Hill Avenue bus.Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Coliseum had a Rt 3 (Prospect Avenue) with destinations of3 to FORDHAM PLAZA 3 to 138 ST 3 to 149 ST 3 to BOSTON ROAD I don't know why there would be two route 3s unless one route 3 is ex-Surface and the other is from another private bus line taken over by MABSTOA. |

Where you able to see a route or destination on the bus when it left the beach club?To the best of my knowledge and this is going back 50 years they carried the same signage in each direction. This was at a time when they was no longer any route name carried on the bus roll-signs. Buses carried a route number and a destination, nothing else. There might have been signage at the beach club. Also I don't think that these buses where open to the general public. I could be wrong about this but maybe they were actually charted by the beach club. This charter would have extended back to Surface Transit days at least. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

It sounds like these were seasonal routes that operated over regular routes but to Shorehaven. This is like the private bus companies on Long Island who operated to Jones Beach over their regular routes. For example, Mid-Island Coach ran Jones Beach trips over the Hicksville-Bar Harbor route but turned right instead of left onto Sunrise Highway at the Massapequa railroad station. Passengers could use these buses between Hicksville and Massapequa. |

I used the Bx13 (now Bx22) when it was run by Surface Transit using first generation postwar GMC buses to get to Castle Hill Beach Club which was at the very end of the street. The beach club was demolished long ago and the land redeveloped as housing (I am not sure what type of housing was built there). |
