Nice shots! I rode on that on the X17J last night (Monday) from Times Square. A few people that I know was on that bus and for some odd reason that bus was operating as the next to the last X17J (6:15 out of 57/Lex) from a phone call that I got while I was on the QM1A about to go into Midtown Tunnel. I made it with 2 minutes to spare as I made the 6 and the 42 St Shuttle with excellent timing!

Yes - on the X30. I was talking to the driver at Busfest and he said that for Monday through the end of the test that the DD will be on the X30 am run and do the X17J in the evening, The purpose was to expose more people to the bus and get more opinions. The driver stated that most people had great reviews of the bus and most ended up upstairs (save elderly who had trouble with stairs who stayed downstairs). Running this bus on the X30 was delayed due to union issues since the bus will only be here for the rest of the week and the union had to agree to allow the one trained driver to "swap" runs on the X30 for the X17J in the evening (X30 = CAS, X17J = YUK).

Also, the bus was tested to see if it could run on the X22 instead of the X30 (to avoid the union issues) since that is another via NJ Turnpike route. The DD had clearance issues with the SIR overpasses so that plan was scrapped.

OOPS my bad - forgot the X22 is from CAS now so scratch (to avoid the union issues) in the last paragraph.

It's a split route IIRC.

Does 0053 only operate on express routes?

If so, are there any plans (if the trial is successful) to add double-deckers to local routes?

It only operates on the Turnpike Express X17J and X30 right now; and tomorrow is its last day.

I can't quite see these buses being added to local routes, unless the Parks and Recreation Department gets serious about trimming trees to give at least 14'5" clearance. (This bus was to have run on three routes; the X17J, the M5, and the BxM3.)

This is not a good double decker bus for local route. I think E500 from Dennis is still better choice, with the exception of the hight issue.

Dennis has made a lower height trident for HK in the past, I don't they can have similar one for E500

IAWTP. The VanHool demo is very difficult to maneuver around, and I (as well as couple other people) feel the steps are just way too steep. Not to mention the lack of headroom on both levels (on an Alexander Dennis Enviro, at least the ones in Vegas, I could at least stand at full height on the lower level, which is great for routes like the Deuce).

Difficulty of maneuverability isn't the problem---it is the height and lack of cooperation between the Parks Department and the MTA.

For another city without low bridges, a TD925 could be useful if the luggage compartment is converted to seating. For Manhattan, the problem is trees...but outer boro-wise, the problem isn't exactly that easy to move, short of complete reconstruction of bridges (this is why the TD925 did not see the X22 line.)
