Proposed 1995 &2006 bus cuts |
|
Posted by JAzumah on Thu Jul 31 10:53:55 2008 Remember when the MTA proposed a list of bus routes to cut in Fall 2004 that were supposed to happen in 2006? Anyone have that list in its entirety?Does anyone remember the routes that were going to be cut in 1995? |

The Bx3 also lost overnight service as did the Bx11 (the Bx35 was spared). The Bx24 was eliminated in the Bronx. In Brooklyn, the B30 was eliminated. In Queens, the Q76 and Q77 lost all Sunday service, and the Q74 lost weekend service. Also, the B5 and B50 were merged (B82) and the B47 at the time (Lefferts Gardens to Williamsburg Bridge Plaza) and the B62 were merged (B43), with the B62 service to downtown Brooklyn lost. The B54 was reduced to hourly servce overnight as well, and the B2 and B16 lost overnight service. There were many more, but that's what I remember off of the top of my head. |

I started in 1995 and our class was told we may not finish the year off. Many mechanics and maintainence managers were transferred to transportation as bus operator and transportation management. Also many managers were layed off. I remember working 5th avenue and only picking up two or three people on an entire trip in the evenings. What changed things dramatically was the metrocard in 1997. Ridership shot up big time, we were overwhelmed quickly. But it saved NYCt buses. |

I think that was when the overnight short turn on the s59 was killed off, leaving no bus on Richmond Ave overnight. But that may have been an earlier cut, too... |

No, the Bx 24 was eliminated altogether.A restructuring of routes in Riverdal cut back the M100 to the top part of Manhattan island, the Bx1 was also cut back to West 231st Street, while the Bx7 was extended to 168th Street as well as a new route, the Bx 20 was created. |

If a Mets game runs late, and I miss the last x17 out of 57th Street, I need to take a cab from the Eltingville train station if I want to be home by 1am. |

Or, if you know you have to catch the last bus...leave the game early! That was the message the MBTA sent to Red Sox fans during that five-game series where the Yankees swept in Fenway a few years ago. |

Whose the genius that thought of these cuts?Use the Bx35/36 as an alt to the Bx3? You get from 181 to Tremont and then what? walk to Riverdale? but then again it ended at kb so you had to walk anyway. Use the Q44 and Bx22 to get from Jamaica to Science? I tried that once, got on the Q46 at 5:50 and still got to school late. This is my favorite one: Bx18 Discontinue Bx18 service. Alternate service: Bx40, Bx42 buses for some customers... so the people on Macombs Rd and Sedgwick were supposed to walk to the (4)? What's ironic is that all the Bronx cuts that were made are needed now and some of the other cuts that were made are being revoked (Q42, Bx3, Bx13). IMO they need to bring the Bx24 back. with the new 225 mall it'd actual see a great deal usage |
