The express buses aren't on Staten Island for no reason, but you wouldn't realize that with your senseless beliefs. From certain points on SI, it takes entirely too long to get to the Ferry in a reasonable time and that's where the express buses come in. |

Staten Island are the heaviest users of express buses and with the lack of (feasible) transportation coverage on the borough, the express buses aren't going anywhere, at all. Actually, according to the Staten Island Transportation Task Force, the SI Express Bus Division is set to expand, scheduling-wise and routing-wise later this year/early next year. |

Have you been paying attention at all? A commuter rail link is what Staten Island wants! The SI Express Buses didn't receive the lowest report card grade for no reason, but the problem is, Staten Island wouldn't function without the express buses. The express bus network is currently the best (and only) option for most SIers but if a rail link was built, the express bus network would be abandoned in a heartbeat! And you don't have to waste your time coming up with a simple solution. That's that really, the express bus network is to Staten Island as the subway is to the rest of the boroughs, and that's not going to change until an alternative is introduced. |

QM1A, it doesn't happen all the time because of the headways but i have seen it occur. Most of the Queens routes have ridership to match the SI routes, it just we have better service than you do so it's more evenly distributed. There are times when you see more QM1/1A's than Q46 buses. Run the QM1A every 2 hours (like someone suggested) and people would be riding on the roof and sitting on top of each other. What needs to improve in Queens is the info at bus stops, because it's nonexistent. You just get to the stop and pray you didn't miss the bus. I do feel bad for SI riders, but the problem with their express buses can't be fixed until MTA gets more buses and a place to put said buses. And making someone pay $20 to ride an express bus is as irrational as getting rid of the buses. All it would is force people on to the trains which in the case of the (E) aint going to happen cuz it's over capacity. And before anyone says people could take the (V), don't. Cause for most people it would require them to take it, switch to the (E) or (F) at 71st and then get on another bus. |

For a lot of city residents, young and old, short and long term, the subway, no matter how clean, efficient, and safe it has become since or will become in the future, will always be stuck in their minds as it existed in the 1970's, as that is how it is STILL portrayed in popular culture. And for large portions of the city, the subway is inadequate, or in the case of most of Queens and all of Staten Island, does not reach them. This is an area where x-bus service is called for. And the only real alternative for those people taking the x-bus is simple-drive there. |
