I don't see what the big deal is regarding discontinuities (known as interrupted streets. A lot of streets are interrupted by parks, cemeteries. etc. Avenue O is interrupted by Flatbush Bus Depot.

All things considered, Brooklyn does pretty well with having most of its numbered Streets with few or no interruptions. In many areas you can drive without a map just by knowing the grid system. Sure once in while you will get stuck by a street that dead ends.

Compare that with Queens where the grid system is virtually useless in getting around without a map. Unlike Brooklyn, you must pinpoint your destination on a map and then plot your course. That is because the average numbered street in Queens is interrupted six times if it is any longer than three blocks. In Brooklyn it is more like once or twice with many continuous streets.

The first time I was in Queens by car, my uncle tried to use Brooklyn logic in finding an address in Queens without using a map. He figured he could just drive down 147 Avenue until he gets to the right number. The street would end every couple of blocks. When he found it again, it would end soon thereafter or the one-way traffic would be reversed. It took us forever to get to our destination.
