That may be a custom, but I don't think it is very universal. I've never seen it done, AFAIK. More often, at religious weddings, the men will sit on one side and the women on the other.

At, most frum weddings I've been to, men and women sat together at the ceremony and dinner, and are only separate at kabbalat panim and dancing.
