The fact is that fewer people are using express bus service, except for Staten Island, because $5.50 is just too high. They are using the subway instead, because, unlike Staten Island, they have the option of the Subway.

But why haven't south shore Staten Island riders followed suit, and use the SIR? My hypothesis is that the SIR maybe too far away for most people to use. The rememdy is to have more routes feed into the SIR, e.g., the S52. But having few routes feed into the SIR is the only way the X1-9 and X15 could still be cash cows.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave...
