There are a few reasons for NJT, some legit...1 - when NJT bought Transport of New Jersey in 1980 and pledge to replace the aging GMCs, there were no US-made suburbans available. That led to the purchase of MC-9s as suburbans, and they have been unable to "go backwards" now that customers have been riding coaches for 27 years. 2 - service area: NJT needs vehicles that can operate anywhere in the state at any given time, from congested narrow city streets to rural routes that can cover 50+ miles each way. (Many of the current 31x and 55x routes in south Jersey were listed in Russell's Guide as long-distance routes dating back to Public Service.) 3 - NJDOT maintains a restrictive axle load limit because of infrastructure that dates back to the 1930s. This requires unusual placement of components to keep rear axles "light". 4 - NJT solicits customer feedback on interiors. While this makes for a comfortable attractive atmosphere, it puts pressure on NJT and manufacturers to design things that most TAs wouldn't consider. The NABI suburbans require all kinds of extra wiring to handle the over-seat modules in the package racks that include reading lights, stop request buttons, and speakers. |
