This is really sad news. I hope the person whom did killed the B/O get caught and get whats coming to him. My thoughts go out to this operator's family, friends, and fellow co-workers.

This is one of the many risks that we Bus Operators face with on a daily basis. We deal with all kinds of people. Not only that, we dont know when some wackjob will "snap". After hearing about so many incidents regarding driver assaults, It should be mandatory that ALL transit agencies install a drivers shield on all buses to protect Operators from harm...even in places where its unlikely to happen. Nowadays, the economy is staggering, unemployment & crime rate is on the rise in most areas.

Some people may disapprove of drivers shields because it might discourage customer interactions. I dont think the barriers would discourage interactions. Passengers can still ask for information, request assistance securing wheelchairs, etc ( Its just like going inside a bank and interacting with the teller whose behind 5 inches of glass ). Think about it ...If somebody were to attack me while the bus is moving & I loose control of the vehicle, what would u think will happen ?
